In Tim OBriens novel The Things They Carried, he uses a metafictive air to preserve war stories. OBrien keeps readers questioning what part of the Vietnam stories are straight and how much of it is fictionalized. He points out that the fictionalization does not occasion and that the stories are examples of the revolting things that go on in war.
In the war in order to keep the gone active OBrien says they continued to tell their stories. However, the stories are exaggerated and the truth lies with the dead.
Theyre on the whole dead. But in a story, which is a kind of dreaming, the dead sometimes smile and sit up and return to the world. The stories were in the end how the soldiers kept close with the dead.With this OBrien recreates stories or versions of the war. It comes down to gut instinct. The reader feels down in the mouth for the buffalo because it is an innocent creature that gets blown to pieces, and leaves the audience feeling the true horror of war. Although the buffalo story is not true, it til now leaves the gut wrenching feeling, which makes it effective and gets to the point of war is hell. If it had been a human most of the readers would feel actually not have felt as much compassion for the person who was fit continuously. In war stories the first thing you think of is a massive loss in life, with people. Also if it had been human you would not have been thinking about the innocence or of Rat Kileys evil random shots.
