The theme of change is present right passim the novel. Very early in the novel Tom is face with something that is going to change his bread and butter forever. At 4:30AM one morning the Brennan family quietly leave the town of Mumbilli. The Brennan family will be rejected because of Daniels actions. J.C Burke uses this escape as a prologue. Tom must start at a new school, mate new people, live in a new house, puzzle out rugby for a different team and settle in to a totally different environment.
This experience will be hard for Tom but it will allow him to get along a new look on life and proceed into a clean slate.
Later on in the novel Tom is faced with another experience that allows him so gain more maturation and allow him to think about life and how he can come to accept what has happened. In chapter ex Tom visits Daniel in prison house. Tom is shocked by how the whole prison and detention centre works. As Tom enters the prison he is searched by the guards this shocks Tom as he is not used to be treated with this a great deal suspicion. It shocks Tom how much Daniel has changed and how Daniel has gone from having glowing vibrant skin to a colour and weak appearance.
