Mark Twains novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is filled with themes, motifs, and other literary techniques to bear moral lessons to his readers, who were mostly average Americans. Twain sets the adventure in Missouri and Arkansas along the Mississippi River before the polite War, roughly around 1840. During this time, racism was very rampant among gray Americans, but there were some beginning to question its morality. Twain was a self-proclaimed abolitionist who not only believed in gracious rights for African-Americans, but other minorities as well and these views are shown in themes and motifs through and throughout the entire novel.
Twain, when writing Huck Finn, used a reoccurring theme of slavery and racism throughout the entire book. Although indite after the Emancipation Proclamation, there were still racism and racist laws in the south. There was a grey line African-Americans had to freeze on to keep from violating racist laws. This form of racism, although much break down than slavery, still needed to be abolished. Twain recognized that this racism was no longer a specific thing abolitionists wee to budge (i.e.
slavery), but a non-specific form that was much harder to fight against. Twain shows this in his book using the character Jim, Jim was a slave who escaped his owner. Although Jim was free from his owner, he still bareheaded the title of the slave whom belonged to Miss Watson. It was not until the very terminal of the book when Jim gained his title of free when things actually changed for him.
