Two Kinds is a paper about a girl named Jing-Mei, whose nonplus wishings her to be a prodigy of something to vie with her friends daughter. Her mother immigrated to America from China believe you could be anything you wanted to be in America. But Jing-Meis mother only wanted the best for her. Jing-Mei likes the idea of creation a prodigy but she doesnt want to deplete to actually do work. I think the theme of this story is: if you let other people control your keep, you will move back yourself in the process. Jing-Mei thought her mother was forcing her to live a life she doesnt want to live but we find out that her mother only wants whats best for her. As I mentioned before, Jing-Meis mother emigrated from China after losing her family, her home and everything she had there. Jing-Mei believes her mother is forcing this life upon her because she wants to show her off to her friend.
But I believe, her mother wants this for her because lively in China, she may have not gotten the chance to do whatever she wanted like she can now, in America. What Jing-Mei doesnt realize is, she could have been a subdued prodigy, if she tried. She only wants to be lazy and not work at anything. Jing-Mei saw her piano lessons as something her mother made her do, instead of something she could be with child(p) at. And thats where the theme of the story ties in.
Jing-Mei is letting her mother scratch over her at this point, which is not what she is trying to do at all. Her mother just wants her daughter to pursue in something she likes or is good at but Jing-Mei sees it as her mother forcing her to do a terrible thing.
