After the Sinai cause of 1956, there was a period of relative quiet on the Israel-Egypt border, in part because of the presence of the United Nations. This did not look upon that the conflict was ended, however, and within a year of the "settlement" of the 1956 dispute, the Arab world experienced a series of upheavals. The Iraqi king was deposed and killed. Egypt and Jordan were handicraft blows. Lebanon had a civil war. Israel's border with Egypt was comparatively peaceful, but a center of Arab activity against Israel developed along the Syrian and past the Jordanian borders. From their vantage point on the Golan Heights, the Syrians shelled Israeli settlements and excessively laid mines and carried on a minor war of contriteness along the edge.

On February 1, 1960, the Israeli Defense Forces carried out a reprisal raid against Syrian posts in Khirbet Tawfiq on the Sea of Galilee.
